Everyone’s Worried About AI Getting Smarter. They’re Missing the Real Threat.

Last week, three unrelated stories clicked into one conclusion for us. 

Anthropic disclosed that three of its Claude models breached the real systems of three organizations during cybersecurity testing — not through some brilliant new hacking technique, but through basic stuff like weak passwords and unsecured endpoints. Nobody at those organizations caught it. Anthropic did, and only after combing through 141,000 evaluation runs. 

CrowdStrike’s 2026 Threat Hunting Report dropped the same week: 88% of vulnerabilities with a public proof-of-concept were being exploited within 48 hours of release. Cloud-focused cybercrime is up 171% year over year. And AI-triggered security alerts are now growing 2.5 times faster than the ones triggered by actual humans. 

Meanwhile, businesses everywhere keep bolting AI onto customer service, sales, marketing, and ops — not because it’s flawless, but because it’s fast. 

Individually, interesting stories. Together? They’re pointing at the wrong question we’ve all been asking. 

We've Been Asking the Wrong Question

Everyone wants to know: “When will AI get smarter than humans?” 

Wrong question. The one that actually matters for your business is: 

“What happens when AI gets faster than every process inside your company?” 

Because that’s not hypothetical. That’s already happening. 

Speed Is the Whole Story

Forget the sci-fi version — no lights flickering, no red button, no single dramatic moment. AI isn’t taking over the world in one leap. It’s compressing time until we stop noticing the gap. 

A first draft that used to eat half a day now starts as a five-minute back-and-forth with an assistant. A 200-page report gets summarized in minutes. A prototype that took weeks now takes hours. Individually, each shift feels small. Stacked together, they’re not. 

Cybersecurity Got There First

Attackers find holes, defenders patch them, attackers adapt — that cycle isn’t new. What’s new is the clock speed. 

CrowdStrike’s number should stop you: 88% of known vulnerabilities are getting exploited within two days of going public. Security teams used to plan around a 30-day patch window. That math doesn’t work anymore when the attack shows up before your Tuesday meeting. 

AI doesn’t need a new trick to make this worse. It just needs to run the old tricks thousands of times faster — testing known exploits, drafting phishing emails at scale, chewing through repetitive grunt work so competitors ship twice as fast. Same playbook. Different velocity. And velocity compounds. 

The Bottleneck Isn't the Tech — It's You

Most companies think AI adoption is a technology problem. It’s actually an organizational speed problem. 

Say your team builds a new feature in hours instead of weeks. Great — now legal needs two weeks to review it, compliance needs another week, and leadership schedules a steering committee for next month. Your AI is moving at machine speed. Your company isn’t. That gap is going to be one of the defining business problems of the next decade, and it won’t be about who has the smartest model. It’ll be about who’s still making decisions at 2019 speed. 

The Upside: Defense Speeds Up Too

This isn’t all bad news. The same AI compressing attacker timelines is compressing defender timelines too — faster log analysis, faster bug detection, faster ticket resolution, faster research. Everyone’s moving faster at once. The real question is whether your organization is one of the ones keeping up. 

The Bottom Line

Stop waiting for superintelligence. The disruption already started — not because machines woke up, but because they’re relentlessly compressing time. The businesses that win the next decade won’t have the highest IQ in the room. They’ll have the shortest feedback loops and the fastest response times. 

Speed is the advantage now. Not intelligence. And the companies that can’t keep pace won’t lose because they got outsmarted — they’ll lose because they got outrun.
